Biography

 

After studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Rie Hamada was awarded a scholarship from the Government of France and came to Paris to work under Isabel Garcisanz.

She was selected by the Théâtre du Châtelet to play Mélisande (Dukas’ Barbe-Bleue), and then by the Festival de Montpellier for the roles of La Musica and Euridice (Monteverdi’s Orfeo). She has also performed in many concerts in Montpellier (Pergolesi/Pizzetti).

She was then invited to Avignon for the role of the First Lady (Die Zauberflöte) before playing the Virgin Mary (Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher). She went on a concert tour in France and abroad, conducted by P. Boulez, before playing Liu at the Saint-Étienne Opera, followed by Micaela at the Paris Opera, conducted by M-W Chung. She then played the same role at the Tours Opera, the Théâtre du Capitole, and the Tokyo National Theater.   

She has sung the following roles over the course of her career: Liù (Turandot) at the Avignon and Saint-Étienne Operas, Fauré’s Pénélope at the Tokyo Opera, Mimi (La Bohème) at the Théâtre du Capitole and the Lyon Opera, Marguerite (Faust) at the Tours and Saint-Étienne Operas, Elvira (Don Giovanni) at the Rennes Opera, Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito) at the Tours Opera, Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande) in Tokyo, Blanche de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites) with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) at the Tokyo National Theater, and Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlo) in Tokyo. She has also sung the title role of Madama Butterfly on multiple occasions, in the following theatres: at the Capitole, conducted by M. Plasson, at the Saint-Étienne, Massy, Avignon, Toulon, Vichy and Rouen Operas, and in Japan under the baton of Y. Sado. In the contemporary repertoire, she sang first soprano in the premiere of P. Manoury’s 60ème Parallèle at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

In concert, she has sung Mozart’s Requiem at the Tokyo Opera, and then with the Orchestre National de Lyon conducted by E. Krivine, Jeanne au Bûcher in Tokyo, G. Florentz’ Requiem pour la Vierge with the Orchestre National de Lyon, and a series of concerts dedicated to Mozart conducted by M. Plasson in Dresden. She has also appeared in Britten’s War Requiem with the Orchestre National d'Ile de France, Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder and Le Poème de l'Amour et de la Mer in Hyogo,  the title role of Madama Butterfly at the Reims Opera, Geneviève (Pelléas et Mélisande) at the Tokyo National Opera under Kazushi Ono's baton.
