Biography

 

After graduating from Supélec, Christian Helmer studied voice at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. In 2004, he won the CNIPAL award at the International Singing Competition in Marmande, and then studied at CNIPAL over the 2004-2005 season.

 

Since then, he has taken part in many productions, including as Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte) at the Feldkirch and Antibes Festivals, Le Bret (Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac) alongside Placido Domingo at the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Teatro Real in Madrid, Lodovico (Otello) at the Opéra National de Montpellier and the Gelsenkirchen Opera, the role of Schaunard at the Tours and Limoges Operas, Colline (La Bohème) at the Beiteddine Festival (a Chorégies d’Orange production) and Salle Pleyel, Amantio di Nicolao (Gianni Schicchi) at the Paris Opera, Don Giovanni at the Lacoste, Antibes and Chartres Festivals, Escamillo (Carmen) at the Rouen Opera and the Opéra Royal de Versailles, Friauche (Le Dernier jour d’un condamné) at the Avignon Opera alongside Roberto Alagna, and Masetto (Don Giovanni) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire.

 

Outside France, Christian Helmer has appeared in Gelsenkirchen and Nuremberg (Le Comte Ory, La Bohème, Otello, Donizetti’s L’Assedio di Calais, L’Incoronazione di Poppea), as well as in Dublin (Don Giovanni), Madrid, Amsterdam (Iphigénie en Aulide) and Bari (as Pietro in La Muette de Portici).

 

He recently sang Orbozzano (Tancredi) and Cecil (Maria Stuarda) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Girot (Hérold’s Le Pré aux Clercs) at the Opéra Comique and Escamillo (Carmen) at the Avignon Opera, . He also appeared in Frédéric Verrière’s contemporary opera Mimi at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord,  Don Estoban (der Zwerg) at the Opera de Lille and at the Opera de Rennes, Herode (Massenet's Herodiade) in Saint-Etienne, Le Marquis de Granville (Luca Francesconi creation's Trompe la Mort), Panthée (Les Troyens) and The Baron Douphol (Traviata)  at the Paris National Opera, Charles Simon Favart (Offenbach's Madame Favart) at the Opera Comique & Caen, Capulet (Roméo et Juliette) in Bordeaux, Escamillo (Carmen) in Massy and in Reims.

 

He is currently preparing to sing   Scarpia (Tosca) in Compiègne, Escamillo (Carmen) in  Clermont-Ferrand...
